Tony Robbins: The Six Human Needs
A Visual Exploration of Identity and Fulfillment
Overview
The idea behind this project is to explore the core needs that shape an individual's personality.
Around the world, people engage in similar activities but in vastly different ways. While cultural and racial behaviors vary, the fundamental needs they aim to fulfill remain universal.
Our priorities and actions throughout life are profoundly influenced by six core human needs, which can be organized in a hierarchy from the most basic to the most advanced: certainty, variety, significance, connection, growth, and contribution. Of these, the first four are the basic needs that play a critical role in shaping our personality.
Depending on which of these needs is most prominent in your identity, you might consciously or subconsciously spend a great deal of time trying to satisfy one or two of them. Failing to meet these needs can negatively impact your overall well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to identify your primary motivator and understand how it influences your relationships, emotions, and ability to connect with others.
Knowing your foremost need can also help you manage emotional triggers, take charge of your feelings, and build healthier connections.
Do you know which of the six needs drives you the most?
Below, I’ve included designs and explanations that illustrate my top three needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Certainty
Certainty represents the need for safety, security, stability, comfort, order, control, consistency, and predictability.
In today’s world, the mobile phone has become an essential gadget, designed to cater to personal needs, provide a sense of security, and make life easier to navigate. For example, New York City recently introduced a Coronavirus mobile alert system (692-692) to keep residents informed with real-time updates on the city’s COVID-19 response. Additionally, food delivery services via mobile apps have made it possible for individuals in quarantine to access meals conveniently.
In times of uncertainty, like during the current pandemic, the mobile phone has proven to be a reliable tool in fulfilling the need for certainty.
Significance
Significance is the need to feel special, proud, valued, wanted, and worthy of love. At its core, it reflects the human desire for meaning and validation in life. People often create a sense of identity by finding ways to feel unique and important.
For instance, clients might purchase the latest Apple iPhone 11 Pro because they believe owning such a product makes them feel distinguished and valued. It not only helps them stand out but also garners approval within their social circles.
When businesses take personalization to the deepest level, they fulfill their clients’ need for significance. Recognizing this need can be a powerful asset for businesses, fostering stronger connections and loyalty.
Connection
Connection represents the need for communication, love, unity, attachment, approval, and intimacy. With the advent of the internet, the mobile phone has expanded its role in fulfilling these needs, becoming an indispensable tool for staying connected.
Mobile phones not only help individuals maintain close relationships with family members but also enable smooth interactions with business associates. For example, during the Coronavirus outbreak, many people were forced to work from home, relying heavily on conference calls to ensure business continuity.
In times of crisis, the mobile phone serves one of its most essential purposes: keeping people connected.
